About 信的告白 2.0
The original 信的告白 (literally translated as Confession of a Letter) was written by Dr. Lai Kok Fung in 1982, capturing the emotions of leaving home and the uncertainties of youth. It later became part of Singapore’s Xinyao music movement, and over the decades the song has continued to linger in memory.
Forty years later, Dr. Lai revisits the song. With a new arrangement by young musician Yuki and an added chorus, the 2.0 version is not about recreating a classic, but about carrying its emotions across time and geography, letting the song speak again to today’s audience. This music video is more than nostalgia. It is about the present—the unspoken yearning, the unresolved regrets, and the dreams that remain alive despite the passing of years. It also echoes the themes of The Teacher Appreciation Banquet (谢师会), a stage play adapted from Dr. Lai’s novel, which reflects on how we reconcile with time, memory, and ideals that may have been left behind.
信的告白 2.0 is like a letter to ourselves—an invitation to reflect on our own journeys and to rediscover the confessions that remain unsent but never forgotten. The crossover between music and stage play breaks the “fourth wall,” allowing art to connect more directly with our own lives.
The Song Writer

In 1982, Lai Kok Fung left his hometown in Perlis, Malaysia, for Singapore under the ASEAN Scholarship to study at National Junior College. Coming from a small town background, where Chinese was his primary language and English only his third, adapting to a fully English-speaking environment was a challenge.
During those years, he found friends who were also navigating change. For a school competition, he submitted an unfinished piece about leaving home and the uncertainties of youth. That song, Confession of a Letter, unexpectedly won first prize. Two years later, it was included in Singapore’s first campus song compilation, Tomorrow 21, marking the beginning of the Xinyao movement.
