FEAR

Theme in September: "Fear" (Videography Version * Collaboration between meme production)

When hugs cause fear, when handshakes are hesitant, when breathing brings anxiety… trust becomes doubt. You fear that there are virus particles in the air. You fear that the distances between you and others would extend beyond one metre. These fears did not exist in the past. This is the inaugural year. You are still learning how to face these fears.

Dancer - Fione CHIA

Fione Chia graduated from ASWARA with a Bachelor of Dance (Honours) in Choreography, where she was exposed to traditional Chinese, Malay, Indian, and contemporary dance. She has participated in many dance performances, festivals and competitions such as Dance Box (MyDance Alliance), MPO Seni Ensemble, Gerak, International Dance Day, Take off (Penang Performing Arts Centre), and Release 3.0 (Maya Dance Theatre, Singapore). In 2012, her choreography “Jin Zhu Long” was nominated for the Top 18 in the 7th No Ballet International Choreography Competition in Germany.

Fione is currently a choreographer and dancer with the Kwang Tung Dance Company, as well as a freelance dance educator.

About this project

2020 has been a challenging year. The pandemic affected everyone, and the arts and culture industry is one of the worst hit economically. Countries have launched rescue plans for artists; many have resorted to online performances. This is a drastic shift for performing arts - from live shows in special venues to performances in the cloud, which audiences may watch anywhere, anytime. Performance artists are venturing into the unknown, creating new forms of expressions, probing new questions.

Kwang Tung Dance Company, under The Sel & KL Kwang Tung Association Youth Section, has been promoting modern dance for decades. Artistic director Amy Len sensed the changing times and, together with the Youth Section, present Merentas Awan: A fundraising art project.

Artists from different backgrounds were invited to collaborate in this cross-disciplinary project to capture these fast-evolving times. The artists reflect on the myriad social structures surrounding us. Through creative dialogue, they craft their responses to the challenges and opportunities facing us today.

Merentas Awan is presented via videography and photography. The artists explore six themes in the two formats; in total, 12 pieces are performed by 12 individual dancers. We will upload two art pieces to our social media platforms each month for public viewing, from July to December 2020.

The convenience of cloud computing offers artists a way to communicate amidst the inconvenience of physical distancing. This "stage" in the cloud invites audiences to connect with our artists and join them in contemplating life. The Youth Section hopes to use this platform not only to catalyse creative encounters, but also to raise funds for two organisations in need. We welcome donations  in all amounts as we seek new possibilities to continue supporting each other, together in the cloud.
